Since my last post before my break was the Monday before Thanksgiving,
I thought a bit of autumn glory would be an appropriate introduction
to getting caught up a bit.
How was your Thanksgiving?
Did you spend it with family and/or friends?
🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃
Strong Heart's brother and his wife invited us to spend the day at their house.
It was such a lovely day.
There was a lot of food choices,
but the biggest blessing was spending time with family that we don't see very often.
Our niece and her husband and four boys were there,
as well as a family friend.
We came away with many precious memories tucked away in our hearts.
What kind of things did you do to prepare for Christmas?
Do you bake any traditional goodies? Decorate a tree? Wrap gifts?
🍪🎄🎁
I tried to include the Nativity in the above graphics, but sadly there was not one in the Blogger app.
This is an AI generated one from the internet.
It's important to me to include this one,
not that there's anything wrong with baking and decorating and giving gifts.
But the reason there is a Christmas is because of the birth of our precious Savior.
🍪🍪🍪
During my break, I did do some traditional baking.
The only "sweet treat" that Strong Heart asked for this year was the
German spiced cookie known as Lebkuchen.
It's something that I've made every Christmas the years that our children were growing up and I've been continuing the tradition each year since we moved here 25 years ago.
This is an AI generated image from the Internet,
I've made different variations of them.
This year I cut them in squares and the citron and almonds were mixed in the dough.
🎄🎄🎄
We did have our little four-foot Christmas tree displayed.
I decorated it this year with my paternal grandma's Shiny Bright balls.
I love doing that because it makes me feel close to her.
She was a lady who had a great impact on my life.
👦👧👧
One of my very treasured memories from this year's Christmas preparations
was having the "Littles" from next door here to make gifts for them to give
to their parents and grandmas.
Strong Heart had cut out a wooden puzzle of the type of dog they have.
Then the day they came over, he sat with the Little Guy as he painted it.
The girls and I made Lavendar soap for their gifts.
The oldest girl is now a teenager,
so, she ran the microwave to do the melting of the soap compound,
Then they each took turns pouring the melted soap base into the soap molds
and adding the Lavendar buds to the molds.
🍕🍨🍕
The second day that they came over was nothing but sheer joy and fun!
The three of them wrapped their Christmas gifts.
I had planned ahead by making and baking cut-out sugar cookies
and mixed up the icing for them.
Once they had wrapped their gifts,
I set them each up with the icing, sprinkles, knives, and cookies
and they went to work decorating them.
What fun they had!
I did take pictures, but just to ensure their privacy, I won't share those.
Once the cookies were all decorated,
we had pizza and ice cream.
They thought that was the end of the "party",
but we surprised them with little gifts.
🎁🎁🎁
It was so much fun watching them open them and seeing their expressions!
Our daughter, son-in-law surprised us with a visit the middle of December.
They took us out for lunch and while we were sitting in the restaurant,
our grandson (their son who lives in a different state from them and us)
came walking into the restaurant to join in on the surprise!
Such a fun day!
I so enjoyed just having a slower pace this year leading up to Christmas Day.
It gave me an opportunity to spend more time each day in God's Word
and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.
Please let me know in the comments what your favorite part of Christmas was for you this year!
I'd love to hear!
sounds like a lovely break and I love that your GS surprised you!! That is an awesome surprise.
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness, Karen! We were sitting there in the restaurant eating and my husband said, "And there's Josh". It took a few seconds for it to sink in, and we were in the back of the restaurant, so I didn't see him when he came through the door. But it didn't take long for me to get out of my seat when I realized what was happening. :)
DeleteI enjoyed reading about your fun events. I love that your family surprised you with a visit.
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy the memories that come with Christmas; the ornaments that we remember people with, and the traditional recipes.
Your time with the neighbor kids is beyond sweet. I'm going to be posting on my blog about Bob's time with our neighbors, their mom gave me the ok to post pics too.
It's good to have you back again!
Thank you, Mari. That surprise was awesome!
DeleteThe kiddos didn't know that there was going to be gifts involved for them...they thought it was just gifts for them to give. So, we were finishing up our little "party" and I said, "Well, there's just one more thing that we need to do yet." They each got a puzzled look on their face and that made it even more special as we watched their expressions as they opened the little gifts from us. SO fun! I'm already planning next year's Christmas event with them, God willing.
Dianna, what sweet times you had with your young neighbors and treasured memories with them. I also got a wee bit teary reading of your mid December surprise visits. Wonderful. The older I get the best gifts are time with our loved ones!
ReplyDeleteDear Ellen...I agree.... the best gifts are time with our loved ones! God has been gracious to allow us time with both of our children and their families this year. There are always treasured memories when we are together.
DeleteIt was a more leisurely season for me this year and I was very thankful. One highlight was my daughter-in-laws mother and sister moving up from Florida and our Christmas Day all together. I decorated my home, put up my tree but no baking. There was my traditional Christmas movies to watch and just celebrating Advent as I counted the weeks until Christmas. Your Christmas festivities sounds lovely. And fun with the "Littles"!
ReplyDeleteI have so enjoyed hearing about your Christmas Day with your son and daughter-in-law and her mom and sister. I'm just so happy that you are in an area now where those things are possible for you. Thank you for sharing about your Christmas preparations as well. Have a wonderful remainder to your week...stay warm!
DeleteThis is a great post! I love catching up and hearing what you have been up to. I hosted a small get together for Christmas at my home. Middle daughter and her family came, Dan and his sister and brother in law. Just the right number for my space this year. Thank you for sharing your holidays with us. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Monica, for your kind words. Your Christmas sounds lovely. I'm glad you had one of your kids there to share it with along with Dan and his sister and brother-in-law. Looking forward to this new year and what the Lord has in store for all of us. xx
DeleteWhat a lovely Christmas! I didn't do any baking except an apple pie for Christmas, and some simple cookies for New Year's Eve. I usually make Harvest Loaf Cake some time in December but didn't this year. Our oldest son came in from RI for about ten days, and we saw our kids and grandson here a lot more. It was a packed several days, and I loved it. But I was glad to have some quiet days afterward.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Barbara. It was a lot of fun. One thing that I did forget to mention was that the first week in December, I spent some time making three batches of jelly to give to the church family. That was so much fun! I love jelly making...and they all enjoy jelly...so it works well. I started doing it last year and they looked forward to it this year. I had fun using fabric to decorate the tops of the jars and adding cute labels to each jar. I think there were like 33-34 jelly jars total. Carroll asked that we go back to counting carbs and unfortunately, I didn't get your Harvest Loaf Cake made. But hopefully, next Christmas, God willing. I wanted to wait until the holidays to make it since that's when you always made yours. I know you enjoyed having your oldest son in from RI...and all of the family time that you all were able to spend together. And I totally understand the welcoming of quiet days after things were back to normal.
DeleteI so enjoyed reading your post this afternoon. Sounds like a lovely holiday season for you. I did not do any baking (no one really eats it...but me) but I now wish that I had. Even if just to share. I had a similar fun evening at Thanksgiving - helping some of the Junior Church boys bake pumpkin rolls that we gifted to several of the seniors at church. We then went for dinner and some ice cream. Such a fun evening. At Christmas, I am grateful that things were quiet (and drama-free) which was a tremendous blessing. We typically go out but stayed home - and had a pasta bar. Not traditional but everyone loved it. I am also grateful that 2025 has started off peacefully. Cold, yes, but this first week has been a good one. I hope yours has as well.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind words, Jennifer. It truly was a good holiday season for us. I still have cookies in the freezer that I baked then. We weren't nearly as big on sweets this year as we have been in the past. I LOVED hearing about the fun evening you had at Thanksgiving helping some of the Junior Church boys bake pumpkin rolls. And how special that you did it with the intent of giving to several of the seniors at church. And then dinner and ice cream! What a blessing you are! Your pasta bar sounds really good! Sometimes, I think we just need to have a change. xx
DeleteSpending time with the family is the best way to celebrate the holidays. We had a nice and quiet holiday with a few friends stopping by. Our daughter lives on the west coast of the US so we communicate via email or phone. It's always nice catching up with family. Wishing you and your family the best for 2025 filled with peace, love, fun and lots of good health.
ReplyDeleteYes, Bill, spending time with family truly is the best way to celebrate the holidays. We were blessed to be able to spend time with both our daughter and her family, as well as our son and his family this year. Sometimes, we just make our own "holidays". :) We live in WV and our daughter lives about 5 hours away, our grandson lives about four hours away and our son lives in Maine, so he's quite a distance away. So, I understand about communicating through emails, phone and texts. Thank you for your kind wishes for our family for 2025.
DeleteHello! Welcome back! So glad you had a lovely break filled with happy holidays! Christmas was lovely here, the first in our Maryland home. It seemed to come and go so quickly, but everyday life is wonderful too! So happy to see you back, my friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Billie Jo! It's great to be back. I'm glad that you enjoyed your first Christmas in your Maryland home! That's so fun! And, yes, I totally agree with you...everyday life is wonderful too! It's the little things in life, 'ya know?
DeleteSpending time with the family is the best way to celebrate and this is what I did.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Jan, I'm so glad that you were able to spend time with family to celebrate the Christmas season. I thought of you and the loss you suffered not so long ago and wondered if you had family close by. xx
