From My Journal

 TODAY IS: 26 May 2025

AROUND ME:  I have had a break in the rain for a bit...at least until what is predicted for Wednesday.  Some of the Irises that I thought I had lost are now blooming and so delicate!  The Weigelia has outdone itself this year!

I AM PONDERING:  how blessed I am to not have had to live through the World Wars, the Blitz, and the Great Depression.  Life is fragile, and a book I am currently reading is a true story concerning midwifery in the East End London in the 1950s.  Life is fragile and may we never take it for granted.

AMONG MY FAVORITE THINGS:  cooking and baking!

BOOKS I AM CURRENTLY ENJOYING:  I finished Emma by Jane Austen last week and am currently reading Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth as well as Delighting in the Trinity by Michael Reeves.

I AM THANKFUL FOR:  my dear Strongheart

NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN: joy always comes in the morning, even though weeping may have endured through the night.  God's Word is always true...always.

FROM THE KITCHEN:

High Protein Bagels
(recipe will follow on Wednesday)

SOMETHING I REALLY ENJOY:  being back in the kitchen, making more than peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. 😀

SCRIPTURE FOR THE WEEK:

TO DO LIST FOR TODAY:  two loads of laundry, potting of some plants, starting a study on the book of Hebrews...and reading, cause there's always time for reading.

"So teach us to number our days,
that we may present to You a heart of wisdom."
Psalm 90:12

  1. Good morning Dianna.....Wonderful quote and scripture for the week. I usually add these in my journal at the first of the week....thank you for always sharing them. Your bagels sure look good !! We are having a lot of rain this morning and actually had it all night long. These have been some pretty big storms with lots of thunder and lightning. Enjoy your study on Hebrews! A great study of holding fast to our faith, even in times of suffering and uncertainty. Have a Blessed day.

    1. You are quite welcome, my friend. I enjoy collecting the quotes and Scripture. The bagels are super easy to make. We have had sunshine for two days in a row now, with the exception of a few sprinkles yesterday. The thing I'm looking forward to in the study of Hebrews is learning more of the key theme of the book...the supremacy of Christ. It's a good study, using a commentary that our pastor loaned me.

  2. My late mother and father-in-law had so many stories of their life in London during the Blitz. Life was so fragile for those living in that area and the surrounds. Alan even had some memories of it - as young as he was.
I'm in the middle of chapter 2 of Delighting in the Trinity. I make myself read slowly because there is so much depth.
Have a blessed day, my friend.

    1. Living through the Blitz had to be such a frightening experience. I can't imagine.

I'm glad that you are enjoying Delighting in the Trinity. It's my next read that I will start tonight.

Hope your day was a good one. xx

  3. What a great quote from Spurgeon. Hooray that you can create in your kitchen again. 'Delighting in the Trinity' what a great title. It's mind boggling to talk to supposed Christians who say they do not believe in the Trinity. A hard Doctrine to explain but visible throughout the Bible. Hope the last several days of May are filled with peace and joy in your corner!

    1. I totally agree with you about the Spurgeon quote. Measuring ourselves against the standard of Jesus definitely helps us to put life into perspective, yes?

Delighting in the Trinity is such a good book, Ellen. I read it probably a year ago, but it came up in a discussion in Sunday School a while ago and I decided to read it again. Are you familiar with Michael Reeves? He is in Scotland primarily with Union Theological Seminary, but he's also a teaching fellow with Ligioner.

    1. I have also watched Call the Midwife, Karen. I just finished up Season 14. I didn't know about it until my daughter mentioned it to me a year or so ago. I think at that time I started watching from Season 10 or so.

Thanks for the kind words regarding the bagels. My husband really enjoys them.

    1. Thanks, Bill. My husband is happy to have been able to add bagels back into his diet.

I liked the quote also. When we use Jesus as our standard, it definitely helps put life into perspective.

  6. I love the quote and the scripture.
We did some things around the house, then drove to the cemeteries where Bob's parents are buried, and then to the one where my parents are. A beautiful day for a drive and a good reflection on how blessed we are. My Dad and Bob's Dad's were both veterans, thankful for theirs and others service.

    1. Thank you, my sweet friend. The quote is good...the Scripture is a lot to ponder!
It sounds like you and Bob had a lovely day. We truly are blessed to live in a country with the freedoms we still have, but it certainly came at the cost of many lives. I saw a quote today on someone's blog that I knew you would appreciate. "Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it." You probably saw it too...it was at Billie Jo's. But isn't that such a moving quote?

  9. I know what you mean about being glad not to have lived during the world wars or the Depression. People seem so much more fragile these days--I don't know if our society could handle something like that now.

I'll forewarn you that though much of Call the Midwife was great, there is a disgusting explicit scene in it. It was even more shocking and disappointing because it wasn't suspected in such a book (my review is here: https://barbaraleeharper.com/2022/11/29/mixed-emotions-about-a-book/).

    1. Oh, I wish I had read your review on Call the Midwife. My daughter gave me the five book set by Jennifer Worth. I know exactly which disgusting part you are talking about and the thing is that it wasn't just in one chapter but three. It will be a while before I read the second book in the series.

  10. Haven't gotten around to Call the Midwife...sounds good though. I worked in OB/GYN for years and even got to deliver a few babies. Loved it...

    1. Hello, Donna. How exciting for you to have worked in OB/GYN for years and even been able to deliver a few babies. I would have loved it if you'd been there when I had my two because you have such an encouraging spirit.

However, I did want to mention to you that I will be mentioning something in Monday's From My Journal post concerning Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth. The book was good overall with the exception of three different chapters that dealt with a young woman who had been involved in prostitution. I won't be doing a review of the book but will link to the review of a dear friend of mine who did review the book. I'd suggest that you read her review because this is one instance where the TV movies on PBS are better than the actual book.
