TODAY IS June 2, 2025
AROUND ME there has been enjoyment in the form of my getting outside and being able to do some repotting of some flowers as well as working at pulling a few weeds in the flower beds.
I AM PONDERING just how much our culture has changed in the 75 years of my life. The days of leaving one's home and/or vehicles unlocked, knowing one's neighbors on a daily basis, a sense of true community all seem to be times of the days gone by. I find it quite sad that we find ourselves living in a world where we have to guard all of our information and our privacy.
AMONG MY FAVORITE THINGS for this past week was being in the kitchen on Saturday and making some goodies to share at church as a bit of a graduation celebration for a young man who just finished his 12th year of homeschool. He's such a blessing and it was so much fun to be in my "happy place" doing something to honor him a little bit.
BOOKS I AM CURRENTLY READING Last week I did mention that I was reading Call the Midwife. I've watched the last several seasons of the television series presented by PBS and have enjoyed it. As it turns out, the majority of the book was good, but I cannot endorse the book because of parts of three chapters in the book that deal with prostitution. If you want to read a review from a Christian worldview, I recommend reading my friend Barbara's review by clicking on the link provided.
With that said, what I am currently reading Delighting in the Trinity by Michael Reeves (my current favorite of the Ligioner Teaching Fellows) and He Fell in Love with His Wife by Edward P. Roe...which so far has been a very endearing book.
I AM THANKFUL FOR sunshine, my Redeemer, God's Word, my husband, our children (and their spouses) and grandchildren, flowers that are blooming, gentle breezes and gentle rains.
NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN that resilience is a work in progress. More about that perhaps in the weeks to come.
FROM THE KITCHEN
QUOTE FOR THE WEEK
SCRIPTURE FOR THE WEEK
TO DO LIST FOR TODAY two loads of laundry, weeding in the gardens (weather permitting), a bit of cleaning.
"So teach us to number our days,
so that we may present to You a heart of wisdom"
Psalm 90:12

I am recovering from the worst bout of nausea from an antibiotic! So ordinarily the food would look awesome but I breezed past...I trust it was delicious!! I am feeling better and am looking forward to regular life.
ReplyDeleteI feel for you, my friend. Antibiotics can really do a number on our digestive system. Yes, the food was delicious...in my humble opinion...and my husband's as well. Feel better soon so you can enjoy more time with the grandchildren. :) xx
DeleteHow nice to celebrate that graduate!
ReplyDeleteI read Call the Midwife a few years ago and felt the same as you.
I really respect Corrie TenBoom and that's a good quote!
Yes...he is a quiet young man and didn't want a lot of fanfare, but it was obvious yesterday during the fellowship time after worship that he was enjoying himself in his own quiet way.
DeleteI am wondering if you have read any of the other four books by Jennifer Worth? These were given to me as a gift from someone who also watches PBS's televised version of Call the Midwife, which we both enjoy watching. I am reading other things at the present time but will eventually get to where I want to read the other four...or at least try.
Corrie Ten Boom is someone whom I respect greatly as well. She and Elisabeth Elliot are two women who I have admired for years. I love their straightforward manner.
I loved He Fell in Love with His Wife. That reminds me I bought more of his books for the Kindle (I think they were free or just a dollar or two at the time), but haven't read them yet. I need to remedy that.
ReplyDeleteJim planted some wildflowers a few weeks ago, and some are just now starting ti bloom. I can hardly wait til they adorn the fence line.
I had read your review of He Fell in Love with His Wife and it immediately went on my wish list. Then shortly thereafter it became available on Thrift Books.
DeleteYou will have fun enjoying the wildflowers that Jim planted. I love this time of year!
Love that quote of the week. I read a quote a couple days ago by Charles Simeon from Horae Homileticae (From notes in my Church History Study Bible). "The Gospel is wholly independent of those who profess it." That was good for pondering. Happy to read you had the strength and the inspiration for some kitchen creations. Happy June to you.
ReplyDeleteYour quote and mine go so well together! Thank you so much, Ellen, for sharing that! I've been praying for you, my friend. xx
DeleteI mourn the "good ole' days" for sure. We didn't have to be on guard as much, we trusted people more, life felt more real.
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen endeavors look so good! I can smell the aroma of those donuts from here!
I'm on the last chapter of Delighting in the Trinity. It's a book I'll be picking up again and again.
Have a blessed week.
I know, Melanie. I think of the community I grew up in and compared to today's culture it seems like it was centuries ago rather than 75. And, yes, I agree. Life did feel more real then.
DeleteThanks for your kind words regarding the kitchen endeavors. The donuts did smell good when they were baking.
I'm so glad that you enjoyed Delighting in the Trinity so much. There are several of Michael Reeves' messages on YouTube and some of them are under the same title as the book. I appreciate him because his faith is real to him and it's quite obvious...the Gospel is always at the center.
Nice quote of the week. My grandmother used to make donuts and I loved them. Not so much now with store bought ones.
ReplyDeleteI thought the quote was rather thought provoking. Corrie Ten Boom was good at getting her point across. Thanks for your kind words regarding the donuts. I have to admit that though they were good for a cake donut, nothing beats a raised donut, which is what your grandmother most likely made. I plan to continue trying my hand at making these baked ones...maybe varying the recipe a bit from time to time. They are gluten free and baked, so they aren't quite as time consuming. :)
DeleteYES, we live in a different world now!!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the picture of the house and it even has a clothes line. :)
Yes, we do, my friend.
DeleteI thought you would enjoy the picture of the house and clothesline. It has that English cottage feel to it. And the Scripture is also a favorite of mine. Have a wonderful remainder to your evening. xx
Your savoury scones look delicious. The cottage with the clothes drying on the line looks so homey.
ReplyDeleteWe use to know all our neighbours but that has changed. I agree that its really too bad.
Thank you, GM. They really were tasty and not at all hard to make.
DeleteHope you have a wonderful remainder to your week. xx
Goodness! Your blogs layout etc is different, I'm sure I will get used to it :)
ReplyDeleteSo pleased you enjoyed the scones.
All the best Jan
Thanks for stopping by with your kind words, Jan.
DeleteHello! Your baking looks delicious! What a nice celebration for the graduate. I will have to remember that for my daughter.
ReplyDeleteThank you, my friend, for your kind words. The graduate had an enjoyable time.
DeleteI loved how your posted this post "From My Journal". I even got to know you a bit more. I am looking forward to going back and reading past posts from your blog. I think we might have quite a bit in common.
ReplyDeleteI read Call of the Midwife a few years ago. It was a true story from her times as a midwife. I do not remember that particular chapter, but I plan to go back and read it. I found the series on BBC offensive when they began including sexual relationships that I thought were added just for their own social agenda. This was several years ago and I stopped watching it and Ido not know if this is still the case. We do not get have television, only DVD watching.
Thank you, Cathy. The From My Journal is a regular Monday morning post that I do each week. I think we probably have quite a bit in common as well.
DeleteI only started watching Call the Midwife about two years ago and I've not seen any of the things you mentioned. I knew the history behind the book (and the series on television) so I expected all of the midwifery subject matter, but the three chapters that deal with Mary were rather disgusting, in my opinion. That's why I couldn't recommend the book.
