From My Journal

TODAY IS January 5, 2026

AROUND ME  We are looking forward to warmer temperatures this week...one day in the 60s.  Unbelievable for January!  It will definitely melt the remainder of our snow...and give us mud! :)

I AM PONDERING what special people dedicated nurses are to their profession.  I'm reading a book that is written by a former nurse and some of the stories she shares emphasize the compassion and caring hearts of the people who desire to help people.

AMONG MY FAVORITE  THINGS

The Baby Blanket I'm creating.

BOOKS I AM CURRENTLY READING   In the Midst of Life by Jennifer Worth.  I finished volume 4 of Christmas in My Heart by Joe Wheeler and also Child in the Manger by Sinclair Ferguson.  I have volume 5 of Christmas in My Heart but I decided to finish the other books that I had started before I started something more.  I'm getting close to finishing In the Midst of Life and then I can start some other books.

I AM THANKFUL FOR  the gift of friendship that God gives us.  The people that He puts in our lives (which is each person we come across) are there to teach us something.  Sometimes those lessons are hard ones to learn, sometimes He gives us very special people who connect with us and cause us to grow in our faith.  But they are all there to help us be conformed more to the image of Christ and so I can be thankful!

NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN (OR BE REMINDED) that sometimes there just aren't any automatic answers to questions that we have...sometimes I just need to trust God that it's all for my good and His glory!

FROM THE KITCHEN  there's not a lot to report, but I did make a slow cooker recipe for breakfast sausage that was delicious.  It's from my new anti-inflammatory slow cooker recipe book.  SO yummy!

SOMETHING I REALLY ENJOY is doing for others.  I've been enjoying doing a bit of crocheting each evening while listening to a sermon...I crochet three rows on the baby blanket I'm currently working on and listen to a sermon (or two, depending on the length of the sermon).  It's so enjoyable!

  1. "Today is not a duty...it's an honor". This is great!! It is a blessing to wake up each day especially knowing that God is walking with us in every single step we take. The blanket is so pretty and will be a keepsake gift for a little one. Pray your doctor appointment goes well today.

    1. Those words really stuck out to me, too, Shug. Thank you for your kind words regarding the baby blanket. This little girl already has two big sisters and I've made each of them a blanket when they were born as well. Thank you for your prayers regarding the doctor appointment. I'm on the road to getting some answers. xx

  2. It's supposed to be hitting 40 here this week so we should lose some snow too.
That blanket is so pretty! What a lovely gift it will be.
I've read some of Jennifer Worth's books and really enjoyed them.
    Good verse to ponder on.

    1. Our temperatures reached 46 today! Woohoo! It's supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow and maybe Wednesday, but it won't be turning to snow with the temperatures in the 50s and 60s.
Thank you for your kind words about the baby blanket. I have ten more rows to finish the body and then an edging around the entire thing. I love to crochet. And I agree about Psalm 119:11

    1. I would think that your temperatures would be very similar to ours, but you are a bit north of us, so maybe not. Thank you, Karen, for your kind words. Listening to sermons while I crochet is a peaceful way to spend an evening.

  4. You have been such an encouragement to me! I know the Lord has put you in my path! I hope you enjoy this wonderful weather! Of which I am praying because I don't like to travel to work in snow and ice. Your blanket is very sweet. I'm sure someone is going to enjoy it! Have a blessed day!

    1. Dear Monica...thank you for your words of encouragement. I think back to those days on your homestead when we first "met" and how I was drawn to you. You took such good care of your grandmother and that impressed me because of the love and special place my grandmother had in my life. I'm thankful the Lord has allowed our paths to cross.
We had a high of 46 today with beautiful sunshine...and it was glorious! The next couple of days are to be a bit overcast with rain,
but the temperatures are still warm.
Thank you for your kind words regarding the baby blanket. The sweet little girl is to arrive in March...so not much longer.

    1. I would suspect that since you are south of us that you would have some warmer weather also. Thank you for your kind words about the baby blanket. I hope your Monday has been a good start to your week, dear Jennifer.

  6. The baby blanket is so pretty. Such delicate stitching! I enjoy crocheting doing something with my hands while I'm listening to a sermon.
Our weather is supposed to be warmer here as well. I'm certainly not complaining but we could use some rain.

    1. Thank you, my friend, for your kind words regarding the baby blanket. I had my doubts when I first started it because the crochet hook is only a size E, but it has worked up nicely with the yarn.
We are to have rain tonight and tomorrow and Wednesday also, I believe. Want me to send you some? With all of the snow that we've had so far this winter plus the rains in between snows, we shouldn't be concerned about having a drought this summer.

  7. That baby blanket is so pretty! We're in the 60s this week, too, 40s at night, but it's supposed to be colder next week. Good nurses are a wonderful blessing. That's so true about not always finding answers but just needing to trust God, especially with things that don't seem to make sense

    1. Thank you, Jan, for your words of encouragement with the baby blanket. I love working on crocheting projects during the colder months. I already have another project in mind for when this one is finished.
I really am enjoying that cookbook! Our kitchen has been a bit of butcher shop the end of last week and today...and probably tomorrow so I've not done a lot of "cooking" to speak of, but it will soon be over. My husband went hunting last week and killed a deer, so at the end of the week we were doing up venison. When pork shoulders are on sale, we usually snag a few and put them in the freezer and then he takes some time to make sausage (breakfast, hot Italian and Brats and I always have him to save some out as just plain ground pork). At least this way, we know what goes into our sausages and we don't have to worry about the preservatives. :)

I read your reply to Jan's comment and I see that you have a lot of meat to process this week. I hope all goes well.

Concerning the meat processing...yes, there was a good bit of meat to take care of, but we should finish up today. I'm looking forward to having my kitchen back! :)
