From My Journal

 TODAY IS: 7 April 2025

AROUND ME:  We are expecting snow tonight, which means that more than likely our fruit trees, which are now in bloom, will be non-fruit bearing this year, and the many flowers that are in bloom will be hurt.  We are rather "used to this" as we always have a snow sometime around Easter, which we refer to as our Easter Snow, but it's still a bit sad.

I AM PONDERING: how a sweet baby girl that I held in my arms for the first time 21 years ago has managed to become such a wonderful human being in what seems like only a few years.  Although we won't be together today, I still am wishing her the best birthday ever today!

AMONG MY FAVORITE THINGS:

A Wildflower picture from when we visited the WV Botanical Gardens.

BOOKS I AM CURRENTLY ENJOYINGThinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman and Silas Marner by George Elliot

I AM THANKFUL FOR spring rains, sunshine, and blooming flowers and trees.

FROM THE KITCHEN:

Meatball, Lentil and Cabbage Hot Pot

  2. I laughed when I read your books that you are reading and enjoying. Silas Marner was required reading in high school and I hated it! LOL Maybe I should tackle it again being older.
I loved to read Dr. Suess to my kids when they were young.
    Have a lovely week.

    1. Yes, Silas Marner was required reading for our senior year literature class, too, Melanie. I'm enjoying it much more now that I'm not reading it for a grade. lol

Our son was the one who was really into Dr. Suess books when he was young. xx

    1. Thanks, Donna. It's 8:00 PM right now and the temperature is still in the upper 30s, but we have a nice fire in the wood stove, so we are toasty warm.

  4. Good Morning Dianna...Enjoyed all the sweet photos with quotes this morning. Very uplifting! Happy Birthday to your daughter. Hope her day is filled with special Blessings. This dish looks a real comfort food meal ....perfect for the cooler weather you all are expecting. It is cool here today but the rest of the week we are expecting temps in the 80's. I welcome some sunshine and warmer days. Hope your blooms survive...keeping my fingers crossed for you.

    1. Hello, my friend. Thank you for your kind words. Our granddaughter is a junior in college and this semester she is doing a co-op job, so her day today was more than likely a workday, but she was home for a couple of days earlier and then they went back to her college town and spent the day doing fun things. Your description of the Meatball, Lentil and Cabbage Hot Pot is very accurate. It is very comforting. Enjoy your warmer weather. I'll be thinking of you when our highs are only in the high 20s and 30s. :) xx

  5. We have snow and wind predicted today too.
    Happy Birthday to your granddaughter!
Like Melanie, I laughed that you were reading Silas Marner - and then I thought I should read it again too. I would probably appreciate it more now.
Dr Seuss is always a hit!
Enjoy your day, try to stay warm. I'm off to get my hair cut today. :)

    1. Bless your heart. Hopefully, this snow will classify as our Easter Snow, and we won't have any more until late fall. Thank you for the birthday wishes for our granddaughter. As I told Melanie regarding Silas Marner, it was required reading in our senior literature class, but I am enjoying it much more now that I'm not reading it for a grade. lol We go tomorrow to get our hair cut. :)

  6. A very happy birthday to your Granddaughter. (I'm assuming) Reading to a child is such a sweet treat. Happy new week leading up to Palm Sunday! I love this time of year...

    1. Yes, dear Ellen, you assumed correctly...it is our granddaughter's birthday. Thank you for the birthday wishes for her. I agree with your ideas about readding to a child. Even more rewarding is teaching a child to read! It was the thing I enjoyed most about the years I taught school. I enjoy this time of year also. We had communion yesterday, then this Sunday is Psalm Sunday...and then next Friday will be our Good Friday service before celebrating Resurrection Sunday. Such a somber and yet exciting time!

    1. Your comment about remembering and reciting the books you read to your daughter brought back memories of my childhood. Every morning after the milking was done and we'd had breakfast, my grandfather would read my little Golden books to me...the same ones over and over because they were my favorites. After a while, I would "read" them to him. :) My "reading" was that I had memorized them from having them read to me so much. Thanks for the memories.

I didn't realized it was supposed to snow tonight!!! Perhaps they are wrong!

    1. Thank you, Karen.
It would be wonderful if the weatherman is wrong because our pear trees are out in full bloom, but we noticed this evening as we were doing dishes that even with the cooler temps today, the blossoms were curling up. We are to have days this week that our highs are only in the 30s. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. xx

  9. I'm sorry you might have snow and that this would affect fruit bearing this summer. It must be disappointing.

Happy birthday to your granddaughter. Sweet memories of reading to our children and their children too.

    1. Thank you, my friend. We did end up with just a light dusting of snow, but the temperature was 26 F. It is disappointing.

Thank you for the birthday wishes for our granddaughter. xx

  10. We're down in the 30s again this week, but no snow, though. I don't think we're supposed to get down to freezing. Our daffodils didn't have many blooms because we had several freezes after they started. Our dogwoods are blooming, and I was afraid the thunderstorms forecast for last Sunday would knock the blossoms off. Thankfully we only got steady rain, no storms.

    1. We ended up with a coating of snow...not much at all, but our low was 26, so more than likely the pear trees won't be producing any pears this year. And our flowers that were all out in bloom look a bit worse for the cold. Dogwoods haven't started blooming here yet...but the Redbuds over around Morgantown have really come out.
