From My Journal

  TODAY IS January 26, 2026

AROUND ME  there has been a winter storm that has hit us, like the majority of the U.S.  However, we weren't hit nearly as badly as was predicted.  We'd been forecast to have 9-16 inches of snow and as of this morning, we have only had about 3 inches of new snow.  We did, however, get 1/4 inch of ice on Sunday.  But the COLD...oh, we are getting that.  Our "highs" this week will NOT hit the 20s F.  And our "lows" are predicted to frequently be in the single digits or below zero.  Thankful that we don't have to venture out for anything this week.

I AM PONDERING the wonders of nature...not only its beauty, but also its power.

AMONG MY FAVORITE  THINGS

Crocheting this new yarn into a hooded scarf.
I had about six rows done and realized that I had a problem with the ends,
so out it all came.

BOOKS I AM CURRENTLY READING
The Sermon on the Mount (Kingdom Life in a Fallen World) by Sinclair Ferguson. This has been such a good read.  I only read a chapter or two a day because it gives me much to ponder throughout the day, even though it is a review of our study of the same topic at church.

I AM THANKFUL FOR my hard-working husband and the fact that our family has made it through the storm without any power outages as of last evening.

NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN (OR BE REMINDEDOF) that moderate exercise is always good.

FROM THE KITCHEN

I tried something new to us last week.
The photo credit for this
comes from the All Recipes.com site
This was absolutely delicious.

SOMETHING I REALLY ENJOY
is working up produce for the freezer.  Last week I worked up four pumpkins, processed the pulp in the food processor and put three and a half quarts of pumpkin in the freezer.

  1. So glad you didn't get the forecasted amount of snow! We didn't either. It is very cold though. Looking forward to seeing your new crochet project. I understand how you must feel when you have to start over... been there. Hope you are able to have a cozy week!

    1. Well, actually by the time this is all over, I'd say we will end up very close to the predicted amounts. After I posted this this morning, it started snowing and has snowed all day. I just finished looking at the forecast for the week and we have several days this week that it is supposed to snow. :) It's winter...our freezers and pantry and basement shelves are full; the basement has plenty of firewood stocked in and we haven't lost power, so we still have it good compared to so many who are without power. We don't have any appointments this week, so we can enjoy the beauty from inside looking out. :)

  2. I'm so glad things didn't get too bad yet, and thankful for power! It's a good time to knit and the yarn you got is very pretty.
It's currently 3 degrees here, wind chill of -2. We are staying in. Bob hasn't even been going out to the shop because it's hard to get it heated in this weather.

    1. Hubby was out this afternoon and delivered a load of firewood to a customer. He estimates (because with the wind, it's a bit hard to be sure) we have about 8 inches now. He said the top two inches was sleet/ice that he used the shovel to break through. So, we will see how it all ends up. It has snowed all day today and is to snow some through the night and then there are a few days this week that we are forecast to have snow.

I do like the yarn. At 6:35 P.M. we have 13 and our low is to be -3. We don't have to go anywhere this week, other than Carroll going out this afternoon to deliver a load of firewood to a customer. He said the roads were snow covered, but not bad. I think the DOH workers are waiting for it to quit snowing before they treat the roads.

  3. I love tomatoes with okra and this looks so good. My grandfather was a big farmer in the area and I grew up eating all kinds of veggies. Seeing your picture brings back memories for me. This is good reading weather...stay warm and y'all take care with those bitter cold temps.

    1. We surely did enjoy the stewed tomatoes and okra. Yesterday I made cheesy grits. Yummy! You take care also...your pictures today of the ice were amazing. xx

  4. That yarn is a lovely color! It looks pink to me--is that right? Or mauve?

We were told we might gets lots of snow, but only got a dusting. But we did get rain and sleet that froze over. There are lots of trees down because of the ice (one in my son's yard!) Our forecast shows nights in the teens and single digits this week, days mostly in the 20s and 30s. I am so thanlful that we have not lost power, either.

That Spurgeon quote is so true!

    1. I can see why you would think that the yarn color is mauve, but it actually is a nice shade of brown. The label doesn't give it a name...it's been like everything else...reduced to a number. :)

I'm so sorry to hear about the downed tree in your son's yard due to the ice. My husband was out this afternoon to deliver a load of firewood to a customer, and he said the first two inches was basically ice from all of the sleet that we had yesterday. It's basically snowed all day today, so we are now at around 8 inches. Tonight's low is to be -3. We, too, are thankful that our power has not gone off.

I love that Spurgeon quote! As you said, it's so true! xx

  5. Happy things didn't hit as hard as predicted. It is nice to be contented staying home especially when weather like this hits. Love that quote from Spurgeon! Stay cozy, Dianna.

    1. Well, they hadn't at the time I posted the blog post this morning, but shortly thereafter it started snowing and has snowed the majority of the day. We are up to about 8 inches now. We are thankful that we don't need to go out anywhere this week.

  6. I am also thankful for safety and protection during the storm. And for a husband that works so hard - for us and helping the neighbors - and has the ability to do so. Actually much to be thankful for this morning!! Glad you are doing well! Stay warm this week...and enjoy the sunshine today!!:)

    1. We didn't have sunshine today...we had snow! :) But it's all good, right? xx

  7. Considering all the snow that got dumped in the US, I'm so glad that we hardly ever get snow. We do get the cold temps because the ocean is close by. I like the scripture of the week. It's so true that our lives are so short and time flies by so fast.

    1. You mean you don't miss those Maine winters? :) I can understand that. Our son (in Maine) went out and shoveled a couple of paths yesterday afternoon and said he was waiting until the snow stopped before he started clearing the driveway with the snowblower.
Yes, our lives are short and unfortunately, when we are young, we don't always realize that.

  8. Did you give up on the scarf or trying again. The yarn is so pretty. I'm sure we got a couple feet of snow and it's still coming down.

    1. Oh, no, I didn't give up on the scarf. I will definitely be trying again. I've just not been able to get to it this week yet.
Well, we had the snow all day today and it's still coming down here too. It's amazing to me how close we live to one another and yet how much more snow you get than we do. We do have around 8 inches of snow now. I think it's supposed to snow through the night.

  9. I do like the colour of your yarn ... very pretty.
I also like the look of the tomatoes and okra dish ... yummy.

Your storms have featured heavily in our UK news, pleased to read you didn't lose power. Keep warm and keep safe ... the weather forecast did not sound good!

    All the best Jan

    1. Thank you, Jan. I'm looking forward to being able to restart that project! :)
The tomatoes and okra recipe was something new for us, but we both really enjoyed it.

We saw in the news this evening that there are a million people in the U.S. that are without power as a result of this storm. We thought our end of it was over, but apparently, it's still going for us. We had some wind, but nothing like was predicted so we are thankful for that. Even though we did have about two inches of ice, it hasn't affected our power.

  10. I'm so glad you didn't get all the snow predicted. It wasn't as bad here in my area as was predicted either. So many without power! It's so sad and I pray for them.
I really liked the Spurgeon quote. So true. Have a safe and warm week.

    1. Thanks, Friend. There was a time when we had winters like this all of the time, but the last few years have been such mild winters that I think we had all forgotten what a true WV winter could be like. :) I liked the Spurgeon quote too. After reading Yours, Until Heaven showed me just how closely Spurgeon followed that quote.

  11. So many people are doing their best to cope with the winter weather. Ice can definitely be a hugs problem. I hope your weather returns to what is normal for the end of January ( unless this is what is normal?) Stay safe and warm.

    1. There's news that another one of these major nor'easters could come through again this weekend. So, we will see how that affects us. We aren't strangers to snowy winters, but the last few have been so mild that I think we forgot what it was like to have a real WV winter.

  12. I've been seeing hooded scarves, I might need to make one...We got lots of snow, over 14 inches and now the extreme cold.

    1. When we would look at the weather map, my husband would say that it appeared that the majority of the snowfall was going north of us...which would have included you, so I imagined that you would have a significant amount.

  13. Glad your power didn't fail...so many here, did. Ours was fine.
    Praying for nicer weather!!

    1. Thank you, Donna. We are thankful that it didn't either. I'm glad to hear that yours remained on. God bless those linemen who are working to restore power. Nicer weather will come...spring is on its way even though it may not look like it right now. xx
