Inhaling Grace - A Book Review

Inhaling Grace by Alan Fadling is a 60-day devotional that I had purchased last autumn because it includes a list at the back of the book of how to also use the book as a Lenten devotional.  Unfortunately, I forgot about the Lenten devotional part of it, as we have been using a Lenten devotional by Sinclair Ferguson.

I have read through these devotions in Inhaling Grace rather quickly to get the general idea of what the book is about.  I really enjoyed the reads and will definitely be keeping this book for the Lenten season next year.  I will put it with the other Lenten devotionals that we have so that I don't forget about it by the time next year rolls around.

Each day's devotion is just two pages long and consists of a particular topic, a Scripture verse, the author's thoughts on the verse and the end always consists of two questions or perahps ideas for further study.

One of the devotions dealing with prayer asks the question in the title, Prayer: God-Focused or Me-Focused?  The author uses Psalm 118:1 as the Scripture and then elaborates on what he means by God-focused or Me-focused.  Basically, when we pray are our prayers all about me or do we actually focus on the God whom we worship?  I'd like to share a quote that stood out to me in this particular devotion.

"I've found it helpful to return to thanksgiving every time I notice my confession in prayer becoming self-condemning.  Turning my focus again on my good and gracious God brings refreshment as well as the desire to keep praying.  Gratitude is exhaling the grace I'm inhaling."  Alan Fadling...page 37

A second devotion that I would like to share is found under the title Words That Bless - Part 1.  The Scripture used was Psalm 19:14.  The author goes on to explain what he means by the word "blessing"...not what you say before a meal, not something that your pastor says that is encouraging at the end of the service, but rather...

"Blessing is speaking words of substantial goodness to one another that actually bring about that goodness in another's life.  That's worth saying again: I'm talking about speaking words of substantial goodness to one another that actually bring about that goodness in another's life."   Alan Fadling...page 47

I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking for a devotional.  The daily readings are short, but they are also thought provoking!

Kindness Brings Conviction

When I think of the opposite of kindness two words immediately come to mind...pride and self-righteousness.  What I am sharing here today is a prime example of both on my part.

I have much to learn as I seek to learn about kindess  (my "One Word" for 2024) as the Lord points out things to me in every day circumstances.

He did just that very thing on a recent shopping expedition.

I was in pain and tired and we had finally finished our shopping in a large store.  I was definitely ready to head to the cash registers, get checked out and move on to the next item on our agenda for the day.

As God would have it (because He had a kindness lesson to teach me), when we got to the registers there were only three registers open with actual cashiers.

I saw the direction that Strongheart was headed and I also saw that there were definitely some gender issues going on in that lane.  Immediately, I asked him if we could just go to another register.

Again, as God would have it, the other two lanes had several people lined up, whereas the line where Strongheart was headed only had one person in front of us.

The person in front of us was a sweet little white haired lady who was the personification of kindness.  I am sure she was just as aware of the cashier's identity as I was, but she continued being her sweet self.

When her transaction was complete and she had all of her purchases in her cart, she turned to the cashier and said, "Now, you just have a wonderful day."

And right then and there, the Holy Spirit used that woman's kindness to this person to bring conviction on my heart and spirit.  Do I agree with the lifestyle of this cashier?  NO!  Do I live in a fallen world?  Yes!  Do I profess to follow Christ?  Yes!

Then I accept the fact that living in a fallen world, these things will happen.  It doesn't mean that I have to like it, but it does mean that because I follow Christ that I still extend kindness.

Kindness in Speaking the Truth in Love

Our words are so important because they communicate to others just what we are thinking.  In my journey of seeking out "kindness" as my "One Word" for 2024, I have been paying close attention to words.  Not only the words themselves, but the tone in which they are shared.

We are living in a fallen world and our culture is going further and further away from the clear declarations of what the Bible outlines for our lives.

What do we do when we come across those who are living outside the realms of Christianity in the way they are living their lives?

Do we just look the other way and ignore it?  That's becoming quite the common thing to do, even among some Christian circles.  We pretend that it's not really that bad rather than sharing, in love, the Truth of Scripture.

I recently have come across two links that I want to share with you, as examples of what Kindness looks like when shared in love.

Jacob Crouch shared such a wonderful example of sharing the truth in love regarding abortion over on his blog.  It's kindness demonstrated through sharing the Truth of Scripture in love.

John MacArthur is such a wonderful example of speaking the Truth of Scripture in love.  I'm so thankful for his teaching and example over the years because he stands strong on the Word of God.  The link I have included shows his kindness in relating to a couple of recent issues in Christianity.

My lesson on kindness through these men?  Sharing the Truth of Scripture is much more kind and loving than turning my head away and pretending that these things do not exist.  Sharing the Truth won't always seem kind to some, but it is necessary.  People hated Christ...if I am a Christ follower, it's a given that I will be misunderstood too, but it doesn't excuse me from being kind in sharing the Truth of Scripture in love.

Becoming Mrs. Lewis - a book review

Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan is historical fiction book based on the life of Helen Joy Davidman Gresham, who later became the wife of C.S. Lewis.

Joy was born in New York in 1915 to Jewish parents who were very critical of her, causing her to feel as though her worth was based on how she measured up to their standards.  An example of this is if her report cards were not straight A's she was criticized.  A curious side note...she scored 150 on an IQ test, she finished high school at the age of 14 and entered Hunter College in the Bronx at the age of 15, earning her BA at the age of 19 in 1935.  In 1936 she received her Masters in English Literature while she was also teaching school.  Also in 1936, Joy had several of her poems published.  She decided at that point to resign her teaching position and started writing and editing full time.

Joy was a sickly child with having thyroid problems, crooked spine, scarlet fever, and anemia.  At one point when she was at Hunter College she began to question the American economic system after witnessing a hungry orphan jumping off a roof and she actually joined the communist party in 1938 for a period of time.

Another area of her life in which Joy always felt put down by her parents was her physical appearance.  Her parents were always comparing her to her cousin Renee, who they said was more beautiful and gracious than Joy.

The negativity in Joy's life caused her to look for "love" in all of the wrong places and she married William Gresham in 1942, thinking she had actually found true love.  Gresham was also a writer, but also became an unfaithful and abusive alcoholoic husband and father to Joy and their two boys.  One day in 1946, Bill called Joy and told him that he was having a nervous breakdown and he didn't know when he would return home.  Joy suffered a defeated emotional state after that.  She went to the boys' nursery and knelt on the floor and realized a Presence there.  It was at that point that she realized she was not in charge of her own fate, as she had believed as an atheist.  Bill did return home and when he did they began as a couple to look to religion for answers for their troubled marriage.  At one point, they wrote a letter to C.S. Lewis asking him questions because he had once been an atheist.

It was through that initial letter, which Jack (Lewis) did respond to, that a three year correspondence between Jack and Joy began.  Joy became quite ill and the doctor told Bill that Joy needed a change or she was going to die.  And Joy's first trip to England came about.  She went in search of medical help, to do research for a book she was working on, and to meet Jack.

Her cousin Renee, who she had always been compared to as a child, had fled to Bill and Joy's home in refuge from her abusive husband and when the doctor told Bill that there had to be a change for Joy, Renee convinced Joy to go to England while she remained there to take care of the house and the children.

Those are the circumstances under which Joy met Jack for the first time.  I would love to go into detail here about how things went for them, but, honestly, if I did that you, the reader, would have everything spoiled for you.

Before closing this review,  I want to share that I decided I don't really care for historical fiction when I realized that all of the letters between Jack and Joy in the book were not their actual letters.  Their actual letters were destroyed so the author did not have them to go by.  That was somewhere around page 84.  But I kept reading and before I knew it, I had finished the almost 400 pages of the book in two days!

I have been a C.S. Lewis fan for many years and this American woman that had so overtaken his heart drove me to dig deeper.  I watched Shadowlands.  There are two versions of it...a two hour and a 50 minute version.  The 50 minute version of it depicts Joy as a more quiet individual, whereas the two hour version depicts her probably in more true to her character as an American woman raised in the Bronx - New York City.  And it is also the version that her youngest son, Douglas Gresham, was involved in the making.

From there, I started watching some interviews of the author, Patti Callahan.  The one I enjoyed the most of those was one done at C.S. Lewis College.  I think the reason that one was my favorite is because Patti responded to a question from someone in the audience about the "fiction" involved.  Patti explained how she went about writing the book.  She began with the "bones"...which are the facts, such as when they were born, died, published different works, etc.  Then she said the next layer is the skin...which she described as the emotions of the people in the book.  She referred to the many works of both Joy and Jack that made their emotions very clear.  The last layer is how she "dressed" the characters and she said that is where things like the letters between the two of them came about.  She said she prefers to think of it as her being "inspired" rather than "imagining " them because she had so much material from so many sources and interviews she did with other people that it was easy to be inspired about what they would have written to one another.

I also watched several interviews done by different people with Douglas Gresham, Joy's youngest son.  He and Jack became quite close, especially after Joy died from cancer.  In the interviews he was asked about the book Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan and he said it was a very well written book...that there were a couple of minor errors, but overall quite well written.  Patti had had no contact with him prior to the book being published, but they have become good friends since.

I know there are mixed reviews on how this was received, but I have to say that I enjoyed the book in spite of the negativity involved.  I read it with an open mind because it's like when we are in relationship with others in our lives.  We can't just write someone off because they may view certain aspects of life differently than we do.  Joy was definitely a high spirited woman, but when she came to the Lord, and the relationship she developed with Jack her life's views changed and I found her to be quite relatable.

From My Journal

 TODAY IS:  March 18, 2024

AROUND ME: after much wind Saturday and Sunday, the temperature dropped to below freezing last night and we have a dusting of snow on the ground this morning.  BUT...the songbirds are continuing to sing!

I AM PONDERING: the faithfulness of God in bringing me joy in this season of spring with the air becoming lighter and how it affects my muscles, causing me to feel limp.  Each day as I walk around the back yard and view the flower gardens and see something new blooming He strengthens my heart and spirit.

AMONG MY FAVORITE THINGS:  when the little neighbor children come for a visit.  They came over one afternoon this past week after school and brought Strongheart and I a cherry nut Easter egg.  The little boy (5 years old) was the one who presented it to me and then he was so cute...he just stood there waiting for me to give him a hug.

BOOKS I AM CURRENTLY ENJOYING:

Refreshment for the Soul is a collection of Richard Sibbes thoughts on different topics and is compiled as a devotional.  So, it will be an ongoing reading throughout this year.

Inhaling Grace by Alan Fadling is written as a devotional, but I am reading it through because each chapter is only a page (two at the most) long.  So far, I am really enjoying it.

I AM THANKFUL FOR: my husband.  We've been married for so long that we know what the other is thinking.  Just one day last week he started to say, "Do you want me to?" And before he finished his sentence, I said, "No."  We looked at each other and smiled because I did indeed know exactly what he was going to ask!

I'm also very thankful for God's protection over our grandson last Thursday night when a tornado went through his town.

NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN   about how to grow different plants.  I have the knowledge in my head now about what to do with my Amarylis from Christmas...time will tell if I had the ability to get it to continue to grow.

FROM THE KITCHEN:  a successful yogurt undertaking!  We now have seven little jars of yogurt waiting in our fridge!

SOMETHING I REALLY ENJOY:  phone calls from any of our grandchldren..  Last week, our youngest granddaughter called and talked for a long time.

I also really enjoy blue and white...especially in the kitchen.

This photo is courtesy of Pinterest, but I love the clever way of displaying the cups and saucers.

Be Encouraged

My daughter-in-law gave me a precious gift at Christmas.  It's a book called Gratitudes & Beatitudes that is put out by The Keeping Company. It goes through parts of Matthew 5,6, & 7.

In my morning reading recently the Beatitude was Matthew 5:5 which says, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

Keeping on the look out for words that are aspects of my One Word kindness, I was delighted to find these words in the prayer that the author wrote out...

"Grant us meekness - a quiet and humble spirit,

a gentle and grateful demeanor."

There it was again...that word humble (humility) that I'd begun seeing just days prior to this, as well as gentle that I recently shared.

I'm documenting these things here that I might see them often.
And I am enjoying having your company on this journey.

Also for your encouragement

Butternut Squash, Sweet Potato, Apple Soup

I have tried a lot of butternut squash soup recipes...

mainly because Strongheart always grows a lot of butternut squash

and they are a good winter squash that keeps well over the winter.

I am fairly certain that I've even shared at least one recipe for

butternut squash soup here on the blog, but not this particular one.

I have made this particular recipe before, but decided to make it again

one day recently because I had all of the ingredients on hand.

It turned out so good that I wanted to share the recipe with you.

Butternut Squash, Sweet Potato, Apple Soup

1 medium yellow onion, chopped

1 medium-large butternut squash, cut into 1" pieces

2 medium sweet potatoes, cut into 1" pieces

1 apple cored, peeled, cut into 1" pieces

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1 pinch nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

pepper to taste

4 cups veggie or chicken broth

Place all ingredients in crock pot and set to high for 3-4 hours or low 6-8 hours.  Once the veggies are all soft, use either an immersion blender or a stand style blender to puree the veggies until the soup is smooth.

From My Journal

 TODAY IS:  March 11, 2024

AROUND ME: last Monday our temps were in the 70s...today, the wind continues to howl as it has for the last 24 hours and our current temperature is 30 F.  Our home sits down in a bit of a valley so the wind basically blows over us, but it has been wild and is to continue to blow until around noon today.  The positive is that once it does quit blowing wildly, we will enjoy the silence!  There's always something to be thankful for, yes?

I AM PONDERING: how the Holy Spirit works in our lives.  I was feeling a bit discouraged yesterday morning and as I sat down to write out a daily Scripture I was blessed to find encouragement in 1 Peter 5:10.  May God be praised!

AMONG MY FAVORITE THINGS:

BOOKS I AM CURRENTLY ENJOYING:

The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment by Jeremiah Burroughs,  I read a small section in this book before falling asleep each night.  I've read this book several times now, as I try to make it a practice to read it once a year.

Refreshment for the Soul is a collection of Richard Sibbes thoughts on different topics and is compiled as a devotional.  So, it will be an ongoing reading throughout this year.

Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan...I'm not even up to page 100 yet, but so far, this book has been an enlightening read.  I'm learning things that I didn't know about Joy Davidman or William Gresham.  Perhaps it's just that I was introduced to them much later in life...anyway, I've found this historical novel interesting enough to continue reading.  I've already seen a softer side of Jack (C.S. Lewis) that I had not imagined before starting the read.  There will be a book review of it at some point.

I AM THANKFUL FOR: living in an area of our country where there are four distinctive seasons.  Currently, it's a combination though of winter and spring.  We've been having beautiful spring days with warmer temperatures and no need of a fire in the woodstove.  Yesterday morning we had rain, cold temperatures, strong winds and snow!  Yes!  ❄❄❄!  At one point, it was like a blizzard.  Then it all stopped...except for the wind.

NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN   just how much God loves His children!

FROM THE KITCHEN:

SOMETHING I REALLY ENJOY:  preparing our home for our guests.  I will be doing some of that this week for our grandson's visit!

The Gospel's Power & Message - a book review

The Gospel's Power & Message by Paul Washer is the work of a man whose heart is definitely tuned to and captured by Jesus Christ and the power and message in the Gospel.

I don't believe I have ever read a book that has dealt so thoroughly with the subject and supported their views so closely with Scripture.  The book is 276 pages long and there are very few of those pages that don't have several Scripture references listed at the bottom of them.

I have a few quotes that I want to share that come from the first 110 pages or so, to give you an idea of how Paul Washer is handling this subject of the Gospel and it's power and message.  Please understand that Paul Washer is a very straight forward person and the comments that I share will reflect that, but they are all truth.

"As our world becomes increasingly irreligious and anti-Christian, evangelicalism runs around aimlessly, looking for a remedy.  We carefully study the fads and fashions of the culture and then make the necessary changes in the gospel in order to keep it relevant.  When our culture no longer desires what we have, then we give them what they want.  When a certain model of ministry draws a crowd of carnal men, we write a how-to book that lays out a strategy for the rest to follow.  However, in all of this we fail to see that we are not making the gospel relevant.  We are only catering to a godless culture in order to keep it within our walls.  In the end, the gospel is gone, God is not honored, and the culture goes to hell."   Page 58-59

"The church needs men who will stand before the opposing masses with nothing to help them or defend them except the gospel and the God who has promised to work through it.  How cumbersome was Saul's armor to David, and how ridiculous did David appear when he wore it?  The sheer weight of it sapped his agility and strength.  Yet he made the crucial decision to put it off and face the giant with nothing more than the name of the Lord.  Likewise, we must refuse Saul's armor and weaponry and go to battle with nothing more than the smooth stones of the gospel.  We must make that crucial decision to throw off the props, strategies, and clever techniques of modern-day evangelism, facing the twin giants of unbelief and skepticism with open Bibles and the clear, uncompromising message of Christ crucified and resurrected from the dead.  Then we will see the power of God manifested in the genuine conversion of even the greatest sinners.  Is there anything too difficult for the Lord?" Page 59

"...salvation is not of works because that would not glorify God; it would make Him a debtor bound to reward the supposed virtue of the creature.  Salvation by works is nothing more than humanism clothed in religion....faith is true religion.  It is man as he is, "lost and ruined by the fall," emptied of all confidence in self, and trusting in the faithful promises of a saving God."  In the epic drama of salvation by faith, God is the hero, and upon Him alone do we lavish praise." Page 66

"As stewards of the gospel of Jesus Christ, we do no service to men by making light of sin, skirting around the issue, or avoiding it altogether."   Page 75

"...man forfeited all on that day when Adam exalted self over deity and chose the autonomyof a finite creature overthe lordship of an infinitely wise and benevolent God."  Page 111

The entire book was filled with so much wisdom due to all of the Scripture that was noted, and would definitely be a wonderful reference book as well as just reading it for the sake of Christian growth.  It's definitely convicting in parts, but also filled with encouragement through to the end!

Some of my most favorite chapters of the book are toward the end of the book...Chapters 20, 22, 24, 25,26.

Chapter 20 deals with the cross of Jesus Christ with the emphasis being on the fact that when Christ was praying in the garden before His crucifixion and sweat great drops of blood...asking the Father if He could to let this cup pass from Him, it wasn't about the pain and suffering that He knew He was going to have to endure, but rather it was He knew that having all the sins of the world put upon Him would seperate Him from His Father.  It's quite the moving chapter!

Chapter 22 deals with the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  It's a very powerful chapter as he makes mention of the fact that the resurrection is what Satan is using as he attacks the preaching of the Gospel.

Chapters 24-26 deal with Christ's ascension as the High Priest of His people, His ascension as the Lord of all, and His ascension as the Judge of All.  These chapters are so thought provoking and enlightening.

Would I recommend this book?  Definitely!  Not as a "light read", but it would definitely encourage in the realm of Christian growth.

Kindness = Humility

I've been sharing, on ocassion, the different aspects of kindness, my One Word for 2024.  Last week I mentioned that I was also seeing words that go along with kindness and showed gentleness as one of the characteristics of kindness.

This all began as a result of my memorizing Romans 12, which deals some with pride.  A few days ago I was reviewing verse 3 which says, "For through the grace given to me I say to each one among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound thinking, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith."

Hmmm...it struck me how directly this was dealing with pride.  What characteristic of kindness would offset pride?

Yes, humility...another part of the fruit of the Spirit!

From My Journal

 TODAY IS: March 4, 2024

AROUND ME: the geese have flown over sounding their lonely honking, the birds are singing, and our temperataures are to be in the 70s today!

I AM PONDERING: the many, many ways that Jesus appears in the Old Testament.  It's been a joy in my daily Bible reading to find Him, as I did today in Joshua.

AMONG MY FAVORITE THINGS:

I read this book over the weekend and now I  am sad...not because the book was disappointing...far from it.  But because it is the last of the books that this author has written.  Interesting sidenote.  I posted a picture of it on Instagram and tagged Michele.  She responded today and told me that this was the very first book that she wrote.  Oh my...if you like page turners when it comes to your reading material, you should definitely read some of Michele's books.

Lewis by Patti Callahan

I AM THANKFUL FORmy husband.  Tomorrow will make 52 years of marriage that we are privileged to celebrate!  Life just gets better and better with this man!

NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN  SO...last week I shared that I was going to try making yogurt using the yogurt setting on my bread machine and a few of you said that you would be interested in hearing how it went.  Not good.  It was actually the second time that I had tried it and even using the purchased yogurt starter packets as opposed to the bit of store yogurt before, the results were the same.  Know what  I did?  I ordered a regular yogurt maker!  It is supposed to be delivered today.  It's just like the one I had before and I know that it works!  :)

FROM THE KITCHEN:

Almond Flour Muffins
(You can find the recipe here in case you missed it last week)

SOMETHING I REALLY ENJOY:  I really enjoy it when our grandchildren call.  Our grandson called us over the weekend.  It seems that he has a few days off coming up a bit later this month and he was wondering if he could come for a visit!  We are surely looking forward to the time with him.

A QUOTE TO REMEMBER:

TO DO LIST FOR TODAY Laundry, make some birthday preparations for Tuesday...it's also Strongheart's birthday!
